Born in Brixham, Devonshire, England in 1821, Mahala Banks was the daughter of Joseph Banks and Elizabeth Collings. To date, nothing has been found about the family in England other than christening records for the 11 children that Joseph and Elizabeth had. Mahala was their 10th child. Mahala married Edmund Clark on 1st September 1849, and they are found in the Marriage index below:
